This award from the Chemistry Research Instrumentation and Facilities (CRIF) Program will enable Herbert Hill in the Chemistry Department at Washington State University to develop a high-resolution ion mobility spectrometer with an electrospray ionization source and a quadrupole mass analyzer for the identification of mobility separated ions. Electrospray/ion mobility/mass spectrometry (EIMMS) will enable the high-resolution separation and identification of macromolecular ions based on their collision cross section and their mass. Ion mobility spectrometry is an extremely powerful separation method for multiple conformations of macromolecules. EIMMS is a valuable quantitative and qualitative tool for the analytical determination of many polar and non-volatile compounds in environmental, biological and industrial mixtures.
