Proposal Number: CCR9875662CAREER: Multithreaded Algorithms, Models, and Runtime System Toolsfor Multimedia ApplicationsPI: Ashfaq A. KhokharThis project deals with the design and development of parallelalgorithms, computation model, and runtime support tools for efficientexecution of multimedia applications on multithreaded computingplatforms. In particular, applications that employ irregularcomputation structures and data dependent communication patterns arestudied and used as a vehicle to investigate algorithmic andimplementation issues related to multithreaded computing. Whileexisting computation models lack in capturing the architectural andcomputation characteristics of the multithreaded paradigms, a newmodel is investigated to be used as a platform for algorithms'development. Load adaptive parallel algorithms and implementations aredeveloped by taking advantage of the computation and communicationoverlapping characteristics of the multithreaded computingparadigm. The executions of the programs based on the proposedalgorithms are supported by dynamic schedulers and load balancersdesigned as runtime support tools. The application area focussed in this project consists of multimedia signal/image processingapplications, particularly those based on non-linear signal processingtechniques. This project has a wide-spread impact on real-timemultimedia processing tasks in defense, scientific and commercialapplications.
