Ein Großteil schwerkranker septischer Intensivpatienten entwickelt Critical Illness Myopathien (CIM) im Verlauf der Intensivbehandlung, welche den Intensivaufenthalt verlängern und immense Kosten verursachen. Frühe Diagnosestellung ist zur Anpassung der Behandlungsstrategie wünschenswert. Die genauen Mechanismen, die zum Zusammenbruch der Muskelfunktion führen, sind nicht genau bekannt. Im vorliegenden Projekt sollen Muskelbiopsien schwerkranker septischer Patienten (Früh- und Spätbiopsien) aufbereitet und physiologisch und biochemisch untersucht werden. Sequentielle laborexperimentelle Ergebnisse können so dem klinischen Verlauf zugeordnet werden, um genaue Mechanismen der Muskelfunktionsstörung zu verstehen und mögliche Tests für eine Frühdiagnose der CIM vorschlagen zu können.
