The Physics of Dark Energy

A program of research in theoretical physics will bringtogether particle physics, gravitation, and cosmology tofocus on the physics of ``dark energy'' --- what is nowknown, from numerous observations and experiments, to bethe dominant form of energy in the Universe. The work willdevelop theoretical models and develop tests which can beused to reveal the properties of the dark energy. The darkenergy exemplifies the synergistic relationship betweenfundamental theory and cosmology. Discovery of the natureof the dark energy will have a basic impact on manybranches of physics.
