The AIM Research Conference Center (ARCC) will foster progress inthe mathematical sciences and contribute significantly to thecurrent and future productivity of mathematicians. Through thesponsorship of focused workshops, ARCC will provide a new venuefor research mathematics which will enhance and complementexisting conference centers and institutes. ARCC focusedworkshops will be distinguished by their emphasis on a specificmathematical goal, such as a significant unsolved problem, animportant new result, or the explanation of the convergencebetween two distinct areas of mathematics. Also planned areworkshops exploring connections between mathematics and othersciences. A small team of researchers will carefully plan eachworkshop so as to maximize its effectiveness in achieving thisgoal. Central to each workshop will be a public website which,during the lead-in phase, will outline the scope of the workshopand provide resources to the participants. Most workshops willlast for one week and will feature a small selection of talkscoupled with several problem and discussion sessions.Immediately following the workshop, the website will be expandedto serve both as a record of the workshop and as a comprehensiveresource for the current status of important problems andresults. The website will remain up-to-date through theincorporation of future work and new developments. Thecollection of all workshop websites will grow to become acomprehensive and interconnected resource for the most importantproblems and results in modern mathematics.In recent years, mathematics has become an increasinglycollaborative endeavor, and many of today's important unsolvedproblems will require techniques from several areas of themathematical sciences. The ARCC focused workshops will providean ideal forum for a team of researchers, working together, tomap out strategies, set priorities, work toward a solution, andset in place a framework for progress on important problems. Itis expected that these workshops will often lay the groundworkfor significant efforts, both by focused research groups andthrough special, longer term programs at other institutes. Whenit is operating at full capacity, ARCC will sponsor 20-25 focusedworkshops per year, each designed to facilitate collaborativeprogress on an important area of the mathematical sciences. Toensure that these collaborations will be successful, the leadersin each field will be involved in the planning of the workshops.Equally importantly, junior scientists and graduate students willbe actively involved in the workshops, thereby ensuring thelong-term development of the ensuing work and contributing to theeducation of new mathematicians. Special attention will bedevoted to facilitate collaborations which include women,minorities, and researchers at primarily undergraduateinstitutions. This will allow for a more effective use of thenation's collective mathematical knowledge and resources. TheAIM Research Conference Center's emphasis on focusedcollaborative research will foster significant progress onimportant mathematical problems and will be of significantbenefit to both current and future generations of mathematicians.
