The Department of Mathematics at the University of Connecticut atStorrs will purchase a file-server, a rack-mounted cluster forparallel computation and visualization equipment which will bededicated to the support of research in the mathematical sciences.The equipment will be used for several research projects, including inparticular: the following work of faculty with the assistance ofgraduate students and post-doctoral fellows:Prof. Choi's work on parallel algorithms to assist the virtual cellproject in mathematical biology; Prof. Neumann will study theparallelization of algorithms associated to transition probabilitiesof Markov chains; geometric analysis and associated visualization ofextensions of mappings, conformal geometry of manifolds and specialsurfaces such as rational minimal surfaces are the focus ofinvestigations by Profs. Abikoff and McCune; topological computationsand related algebraic and symbolic computations of 3-dimensionalmanifolds and of the structure of modules over the Steenrod algebrawhich arise from the classifying spaces of certain vector bundles willbe conducted by Profs. Giambalvo and Tollefson; Computational partialdifferential equations with applications in the physical scienceswhich include coupled Schr\"odinger equations, travelling waves andthe non-linear Gross-Pitaevskii equation will be studied byProfs. Choi, Koltracht and McKenna.
