0138697DorfmanThe proposed research will be devoted to further studies on the foundationof the theory of irreversible processes in fluid systems. Such processesinclude viscous and thermal flows as well as diffusive motion, chemicalreactions, in both classical and quantum systems. Recent work by the PIand co-workers has shown that for most systems of interest, there is anunderlying chaotic dynamics which can be viewed as the source of theirreversibility. The sensitivity of the motion of a chaotic system ofparticles to the precise values of the initial conditions of the particlesreflects itself as an apparent randomness in the dynamics of the system.Current research is devoted to a study of entropy production and relatedirreversible phenomena in classically chaotic systems, as well as to thequantum mechanical versions of the systems and their processes. Thislatter direction is stimulated in part by recent work by many authors onthe quantum behavior of classically chaotic systems which can befruitfully applied to a study of irreversibility in quantum systems. Finally, work will be carried out to determine the analogousproperties of non-chaotic systems, or of mixed chaotic and non-chaoticsystems, with transport to study the modifications of the theory needed totreat such systems, as well.
