The investigators organize an international conference onmathematics in biology. The theme of the conference is"Interdisciplinary Connections and Living Systems." The goals ofthe meeting are to highlight current top-level research, toprovide a perspective on future research areas, to provideopportunities for career development to junior researchers, andto foster interactions between established researchers and juniorresearchers. The conference is linked with a short course on themathematics of biological complexity designed for biologists, inorder to provide opportunities as well for new collaborations todevelop between empirical researchers and theoreticians. Quantitative approaches are becoming central to allcomponents of research in the life sciences. With the rapidexpansion of bioinformatics, computational biology, andproteomics, the underlying mathematical approaches that areessential to these fields are recognized as critical to furtherdevelopments. Applications of mathematics to many areas thatdirectly affect humans allows us to better evaluate the impactsof alternative management of natural systems, develop newtechniques useful in biotechnology, and design more appropriateresponses to health problems. The rapid developments in theseareas require opportunities in particular for young researchersto gain perspective on the broad range of subjects that nowdefine mathematical biology. The conference provides a method tocarry this out as well as allowing younger researchers toparticipate in a formal mentoring program designed to enhancetheir ability to pursue a successful scientific career.
