The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at theUniversity of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) willpurchase a distributed memory parallel computer whichwill be dedicated to the support of departmentalresearch in the mathematical sciences. The principalinvestigators intend to purchase a 64-processor Linuxcluster consisting of 32 dual-processor computationalnodes connected with a high-speed Myrinet network andequipped with a significant amount of fast central diskstorage using a RAID controller. All researchers planto use the Message Passing Interface (MPI) to providereliable portability.The equipment will be used for multiple research projects,including, in particular, the areas of applications insemiconductor manufacturing, quantum chemistry,bioinformatics, computational neurobiology, andconstrained mechanical systems. The research projects areunified by the need to use efficient parallel computingto enable the solution of practically relevant problems.The research areas addressed are of current nationalinterest and involve solution methodologies that cutacross these disciplines and will lead to more efficientsimulation techniques in other areas. The computer willalso play a role in the department's education mission,the university's MARC U*STAR (Minority Access to ResearchCareers) program, and in the principal investigators'Research Experiences for Undergraduates activities, byinvolving students at various levels in contemporarymethods in scientific computing.
