NSF Proposal Number: DMS-0215443PIs: Kawczak, Cai, Lucas, Sun, and Zhu.ABSTRACTThe Department of Mathematics at the University of NorthCarolina at Charlotte will purchase computer equipmentwhich will be dedicated to the support of research in themathematical sciences. The equipment will be used for several research projects, including in particular: a) fastalgorithms for wave scattering in layered media forelectronic packaging and geophysical exploration, b) a PDE based nonlinear least squares approach to imaging indiffusion tomography, c) tests for comparing mark-speciffichazards, d) pricing lookback-Asian options. The newlyestablished Ph.D. program in Applied Mathematics isdeveloping very rapidly and so are the demands for thecomputing power coming from the body of graduate studentsand researchers.The Mathematics Department has played a prominent role inthe University's recent change in status to a doctoral statusby the state and continues to do so as the Universityaggressively pushes its next goal of becoming designatedas Research Extensive. The availability of a high performancecomputing server will be an integral part of the MathematicsDepartment's continuing push to be at the forefront of theUniversity's research enterprise.
