Hadronic Physics with Electromagnetic Probes at HERMES

The physics program supported by this grant is directed at thestudy of experimental nuclear physics at the HERA collider ring inGermany. Research will be carried out in high energy electronscattering to determine the contribution of quarks and gluons tothe intrinsic angular momentum of the proton and neutron bymeasuring the scattering of polarized electrons on polarizedtargets. The main emphasis will be on studying the gluonpolarization, the orbital angular momentum contribution to thenucleon spin, and transverse polarization effects in nucleons.Education and training of both, undergraduate and graduatestudents, and postdoctoral scholars, as well as outreach aimed atthe general public is an important aspect of this research program.
