Hadronic Physics with Electromagnetic Probes at HERMES

The physics program supported by this grant is directed at the studyof experimental nuclear physics at the HERA collider ring inGermany. Research will be carried out in high energy electronscattering to put constraints on General Parton Distributions thateventually allow the construction of three-dimensional images of theproton. These studies also provide the possibility to measure thecontribution from orbital angular momentum to the nucleon spin, themost elusive contribution so far in our quest to solve the nucleonspin puzzle. Education and training of both, undergraduate andgraduate students, and postdoctoral scholars, as well as outreachaimed at the general public is an important aspect of this researchprogram.
