IMA New Directions Program: Visitors and Short Courses

ArnoldThe Institute for Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) isinitiating a program to partner with established academicmathematicians who seek to increase the impact of their researchand to take up research problems in areas of significantapplication. The New Directions program consists of two majoractivities: the New Directions Visiting Professorships, whichwill support established academic mathematicians to visit the IMAfor a period of several months, immersing themselves in theannual thematic program, learning new mathematics andapplications, connecting their research with important problems,and establishing new contacts and collaborations; and the NewDirections Short Courses, two-week intensive courses formathematics faculty members that address active and developingareas of application. The first short course in June 2003 isdevoted to Cellular Physiology.The primary mission of the Institute for Mathematics and itsApplications (IMA) is to increase the impact of mathematics byfostering interdisciplinary research, linking mathematics of thehighest caliber and important scientific and technologicalproblems from other disciplines and industry. This award to theIMA helps support visitors who are established researchers inmathematics and who seek to broaden their research into emergingareas of application.
