英文摘要
AbstractAward: DMS-0349862Principal Investigator: Lex G. Oversteegen, Alexander M. Blokh, John C. MayerThe Department of Mathematics of the University of Alabama atBirmingham proposes to host the Spring Topology and DynamicalSystems Conference (STDC), March 25-27, 2004. The STDCencompasses most of the areas of topology and of topologicalapproaches to dynamical systems. We expect the conference toattract over 200 participants, nationally and internationally. The intellectual merit of the proposed activity lies in the broadand deep interaction among the participants. To ensure strongand balanced representation in each of the areas central to theconference, we propose to have four special sessions running inparallel: Continuum Theory, Dynamical Systems, General andSet-Theoretic Topology, and Geometric Topology. To promote unityand interaction, there will be 12 invited talks of 25-minutes intwo parallel sessions, and 7 plenary talks of 50 minutes. Ampleopportunities for formal and informal interaction amongparticipants will be provided. This will include a sessiondevoted to the state of the arts in the conference areas, currentfruitful directions, and new opportunities. The STDC conference brings together mathematicians andmathematics students working in two core areas of mathematics:topology and dynamical systems. The broader impact of theproposed activity lies in the advancement of knowledge, includingeducation of students, through communication of recent results inthese two core areas. We expect that many of the invited talkswill emphasize interaction of the research agendas of the centralconference areas. Successful conferences in core areas are animportant part of mathematical infrastructure, supportingresearch, training new mathematicians, and developing afoundation for applications in related fields of mathematics andscience. Every effort will be made to provide for the substantialparticipation of under-represented groups, graduate students, andactive researchers in these areas.
