英文摘要
VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL INTEGRATIONOF THE MATHEMATICAL SCIENCESAT THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON Abstract The Departments of Applied Mathematics, Mathematics, and Statistics at the University of Washington will build onthe successes and experiences of their current VIGRE grantto create an integrated program that will attract and retaintalented US citizens and permanent residents into themathematical sciences at all levels. The horizontalintegration of the three departments will be extended to theseven other universities in the region belonging to thePacific Institute of Mathematical Sciences (PIMS), providinginternational opportunities of wide scope for our studentsand postdocs. These three departments will attract moretalented undergraduates to the mathematical sciences byencouraging them earlier, providing ample opportunities forteam research projects, and offering an integrated five-yearBS/MS program. The VIGRE graduate fellowships will supportstudents through the three critical transitions in graduateschool. Both undergraduates and graduate students will haveexpanded internship opportunities. Training in mathematicalcommunication will be woven into the curriculum, and regularworkshops for graduate students on a wide range ofprofessional issues will be held. Finally, there will beenhanced outreach efforts, using GK-12 grants and otherinitiatives. This grant will greatly enhance the training of thenext generation of mathematical scientists throughprofessional workshops for graduate students, travel supportfor both graduate students and undergraduates to attendconferences and meetings, exposure to world-class scientistsattending PIMS activities, and opportunities to interactwith the local K-12 communities. Our efforts will increasethe number of US citizens and permanent residents majoringin the mathematical sciences, with special emphasis on womenand underrepresented groups.
