Elston The principal investigator and his colleagues organize the2004 Gordon Research Conference on Theoretical Biology andBiomathematics. The format of the conference is nine formalsessions, each beginning with an introduction to the field by thesession chair followed by two or three invited talks. In additionto the formal sessions, there are two afternoon poster sessions. The session chairs and invited speakers consist of bothestablished leaders and energetic new investigators who are at theforefront of quantitative biology. Consistent with tradition, awide variety of topics ranging from spatial modeling in ecology tobiological molecular motors are represented at the conference. This breadth of topics, which includes biological phenomenaranging from the molecular level up to the whole organism, reflects the theme of this year's conference, "multi-scalebiology." Invited speakers are selected based on their expertiseand accomplishments, while trying to balance gender and minorityrepresentation. The primary goal of this conference is to bring togetherestablished and young investigators from the field of quantitativebiology to share new approaches and discuss advances in thisexciting and rapidly growing area. The relatively small number ofattendees and informal format of the meeting provide an idealsetting for germinating new scientific collaborations. Thismultidisciplinary conference is crucial for identifying newchallenges and directions in the rapidly growing field oftheoretical biology. Many graduate students and postdoctoralfellows are attending this year's meeting. Therefore, theconference serves to increase the number of scientists working inareas of quantitative biology.
