This proposal requests funds to support the inaugural NortheastStudent Workshop on Nonlinear and Hybrid Control, to be held at theRensselaer Polytechnic Institute from Friday, April 1, throughSaturday, April 2, 2005. The goal of the workshop is to offereducational opportunities to graduate students and juniorresearchers to learn about the latest developments in controlsystems research, particularly in emerging application areas; topresent their research results; and to share and discuss ideas withtheir peers, as well as with faculty members from otheruniversities. The proximity of the universities in the Northeastprovides an excellent opportunity to realize this goal with minimaltravel cost. Upon a successful initiation with the help of NSFfunds, these workshops will be continued biannually. Theintellectual merit of the proposed activity is that it will providea stimulus for sustained research in control systems theory, as wellas increased number of applications in other fields of science andengineering. The broad impact resulting from the proposed workshopwill be the encouragement of a broader and more diverse group ofstudents (than those who are already able to attend majorconferences in the field) to pursue research careers.
