Since the neurotrophic factor BDNF increases the vitality of bone forming cells, we will analyze the effect of BDNF-releasing bone substitute material including polyelectrolyte nanoparticles (PEC-NP) in an implant-associated fracture model of muscarinic acetylcholine receptor M3 knockout mice with an osteoporotic phenotype. In co-culture systems we will determine the effect of BDNF on immune cells at the interface of materials. In addition it is planned to investigate whether the purinergic system, sclerostin neutralizing antibodies and members of the calcitonin peptide family are suitable modula-tors for bone substitute materials of osteoporotic bone.
