A field emission scanning electron microscope (SEM) will be acquired through this Major Research Instrumentation award. Research augmented by acquisition of the equipment includes a broad-based campus research collaboration in nanotechnology and another in support of an NSF-sponsored Industry/University Cooperative Research Center (I/UCRC) on friction stir processing, as well as single-investigator research. Single investigator research enabled by the new field emission SEM includes that on dimensionally stable composites; synthesis of nanopowders, nanocomposites, and nanoenergetic materials; mineralogy, petrology, concrete microstructure; and development of biosealant and heavy metal biosorbent. Significant pedagogical opportunities will result of the acquisition of the new equipment. In addition, the new instrument will be utilized in a variety of campus outreach activities.
