Assistance for U.S. Science Activities in ANDRILL

ANDRILL is an international scientific drilling program to core continental margin sediments around Antarctica. The Program's goals are to determine the behavior of Antarctica's ice sheets and ice shelves; to obtain global climate records from the very recent past to tens of millions of years ago; and to understand tectonic, biologic, and volcanic activity in this complex and active region. This award supports the Joint Oceanographic Institutions (JOI) to run the process for selection of the scientific party for each of the two drill holes. JOI runs a similar process for the International Ocean Drilling Program.The broader impacts of the overall ANDRILL project include formal and informal education, new research infrastructure, various forms of collaboration, and improving society's understanding of global climate change. This award will ensure that the scientific party is picked in a fair manner, and that important broader impacts such as diversity are considered in scientist selection.
