With this award from the Chemistry Research Instrumentation and Facilities: Departmental Multiuser Instrument Acquisition (CRIF-MU) Program, the Department of Chemistry at the University of Florida will acquire an atmospheric pressure ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometer with open access and cyber-enabled data processing. Research programs that will be supported by this instrument include studies on a) alternative chemistries for barrier materials in copper metallization; b) reactivity and synthesis of fluoroorganic compounds and reactive intermediates; c) the chemical bonding center; d) photophysics of metal-organic and organometallic pi-conjugated oligomers; and e) nanoscale arrays for direct RNA profiling in single cells and their compartments. Mass spectrometry (MS) is a technique used to probe intimate structural details and to obtain the molecular compositions of a vast array of organic, bioorganic, and organometallic molecules. This instrument will be made available in an open access cyber-enabled fashion to assist the research of 55 faculty, 100 postdoctoral fellows and 250 graduate students in the Department of Chemistry. In addition, it will be available for use by 55 additional groups throughout the state university system.
