In this Small Grant for Exploratory Research (SGER), funded by the Experimental Physical Chemistry Program of the Chemistry Division, Prof. David P. Shelton of the University of Nevada - Las Vegas his graduate and undergraduate research students will investigate whether dipolar liquids exhibit a ferroelectric phase, using hyper-Rayleigh scattering.Water is a dipolar liquid of great importance in chemistry, biology and technology. This work will help to reveal whether there is long-range organization or structure in water. This could have a profound effect on our understanding of diverse phenomena including protein folding and function.
