REU Site: Modern Optics and Optical Materials

The University of Arkansas Physics Department continues its Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Site on the theme of Modern Optics and Optical Materials. Ten undergraduate students are recruited nationwide every year for a ten-week summer research experience, with a recruitment focus on undergraduates from Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the region. Undergraduate students participate in experimental and theoretical research projects involving lasers, optics, nonlinear and quantum optics, optical properties of materials with an emphasis on nanomaterials, optical techniques in biophysics, and materials physics relevant to optical and electronic devices. Other student activities include lab tours, professional development seminars, a graduate school application seminar, a variety of social events with participants from other REU and summer programs on campus, a field trip to relevant high-technology companies in the Dallas, Texas area, a full ethics course, and a final research symposium at which students present the results of their research.
