ABSTRACT Kadko 0554904SGER: A novel approach to evaluate hydrothermal fluid interactions with injected magma dykes at mid-ocean ridges using radium isotopesThis research will try and establish the analytical and geochemical foundation for a new isotopic tracer for determining the time of emplacement of subseafloor magmatic intrusions using 228/226Ra as reflected in changing compositions of hydrothermal vent waters. It will use both classical counting techniques as well as try and develop a method to allow these ratios to be measured via thermal ionization mass spectrometry. The work will used already collected time series samples of hydrothermal vent fluids from Iceland, the East Pacific Rise, and the Endeavor Segment of the Juan de Fuca Ridge. This work will support researchers at the University of Miami in Florida and the University of Hawaii.Broader Impacts: This proposal provides support to develop a new hydrothermal vent fluid tracer of subseafloor magmatic events. It also supports the development of new analytical tools to measure low levels of Ra in fluids by thermal ionization mass spectrometry. Results will be incorporated into undergraduate oceanography courses at the University of Miami (RSMAS).
