Autonomic/Self-Healing of Composite MaterialsABSTRACTThe goal of this proposal is to develop and characterize self-healing fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) matrix composites. The idea for this proposal is inspired by natural living systems that initiate an autonomic healing process in response to damage. A combination of hollow fibers, solid fibers, resin, a healing agent and a catalyst, will be carefully assembled to develop self-healing FRP matrix composites. In cases of cracks forming within the composite, a crack will be restricted from propagation when it reaches the hollow fibers because of the healing ability of their contents. Research will be carried out in order to analyze and advance the healing process, including the ability of localized healing and high healing efficiency. In addition, nanoparticles will be dispersed within the healing agent to study their effect on mechanical properties. The impact of a successful project completion will be in areas such as infrastructure, aerospace, marine, and medical.
