AST-0604982/Carlstrom, ChicagoThis work covers the conduct of cosmological studies through the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect using the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Array at Owens Calley, California. Observations of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect allow astronomers to infer, from observations of small variations in the intensity of the cosmic microwave background, the distribution of matter in the very early universe. The award also includes funding for the integration of the array with the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter wave Astronomy, which will provide a unique and powerful heterogeneous millimeter-wave array for the scientific community.
