In this award, funded by the Experimental Physical Chemistry Program of the Chemistry Division, Prof. Brooks H. Pate of the University of Virginia and his graduate research students will continue their work developing Chirped-Pulse Fourier Transform Microwave (CP-FTMW) Spectroscopy as a powerful new tool for unraveling the interplay between intramolecular and intermolecular dynamics in fundamental chemical processes -- from isomerization kinetics to reactions in carboxylic acid dimers. A broader scientific impact of this research will come in the applications of the methods developed by Prof. Pate and his students to areas of analytical chemistry, where real-time analysis of volatile gas mixtures with parts-per-million sensitivity is required. Besides the broader scientific and technological impacts of the research being supported, Prof. Pate continues mentoring young scientists, and he and his group are committed to introducing the CP-FTMW spectroscopy technique to researchers interested in its capabilities, through direct collaboration in the laboratory and via the group's website.
