The PI's request funding for the acquisition of Instrumentation to Facilitate and Enhance Research Projects and Undergraduate and Graduate Education in Chemistry and Environmental Chemistry at TAMUG. The requested instrumentation includes a FTIR, UV/Vis spectrophotometer, and a preparative LC/HPLC, which will allow for characterization and identification of specific organic compounds. The instruments will support funded and planned research in 3 major areas; 1) the biochemistry of exopolymeric substances, 2) the investigation of ionic liquids and ionic lipids 3) the biogeochemistry and functional group composition of natural organic substances leached from soils into surface waters.Broader ImpactsAcquisition of the requested instrumentation will improve the ability of the investigators to proceed with ongoing research, provide the basis for future research activities, and provide state of the art instrumentation for teaching purposes. Two of the instruments will also be used directly in the classroom. There is good outreach offered through the SeaCamp program.
