This project will support a postdoctoral to perform an extended analysis and interpretation of coronal spectropolarimetric neutral helium measurements from the Haleakala Solar Observatory for Limb Active Regions and Coronae (SOLARC) imaging infra-red (IR) spectrograph. The postdoctoral will model the intensity and polarization of photospheric scattered 1083nm light by cool helium (He), to derive local plasma conditions that account for the He I detection in a region within about one solar radius of the Sun's limb. Neutral helium has never before been detected this close to the Sun. These results will be combined with space-based observations of heliospheric helium, and near-source pick-up ion models for ionized helium, to expand our understanding of the complex near-Sun heliospheric plasma of the corona and solar wind. The postdoctoral has experience in both the space-based heliospheric and the ground-based solar communities.
