Catalogue raisonne Henry van de Velde. Interior Design and Decorative Arts. A Catalogue raisonne in six volumesHenry van de Velde is unarguably one of the most successful European designers and architects of the 20th century. He was one of the last great universal artists of his time, and his influential role as a Bauhaus pioneer has earned him much deserved attention. By 1896 he received most of his commissions from German customers, and in 1900, moved to Berlin. In 1902 he came to Weimar and remained until 1917. Van de Veldes School of Arts and Crafts in Weimar was reformed as the State Bauhaus in 1919 and Walter Gropius assumed responsibility as its director at the urging of van de Velde. Following World War I, van de Velde lived in Switzerland before establishing himself in Holland in 1920 where he worked on commission as a private architect for the couple Kröller Müller. In 1926 he received a post as lecturer at the University of Gent. One year later at the age of 64, he founded the Institut Superieur des Arts Decoratifs in Brussels; a new art college based on the Bauhaus which he managed until 1936 and which today acts as conservator of van de Veldes complete graphic works.Out of the remarkably multifaceted range of van de Veldes works, only his architecture and book art have received extensively study until now. This catalogue raisonne of van de Veldes interior designs and arts and crafts will do much to close this gap and put an end to the disorientation regarding dating, scope and circumstances of provenance. It will serve as an important reference work for researchers and collectors.The first volume of the catalogue, dedicated to metal art, was completed during the first project phase from 2001 to 2009. It contains 830 catalogue numbers and more than 2,000 illustrations. Work is currently underway on the remaining volumes.
