This research project covers a representative cross-section of key Italian Renaissance works in the holdings of Florentine painting from the 14th to the 16th centuries in the Alte Pinakothek. A comprehensive scholarly catalogue that renders these partially unpublished works and the latest findings accessible to the public and experts, in particular, represents an urgent need. The object of the project is to carry out a comprehensive analysis and appraisal of 80 works from an art-historical point of view and with regard to painting techniques. The Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen and the affiliated Doerner Institut unite the disciplines of art history, restoration, conservation and natural science, required for such a research project. The analysis of the individual works involves a thorough evaluation of source and research literature as well as a technical examination that, in addition to standard methods, incorporates highly specialised analytic processes with regard to painting techniques and the materials used. Within the individual catalogue entries, the project should not be limited just to traditional research work on holdings but always take superordinated and critical thematic issues in modern art research into consideration. Six comprehensive overviews in the catalogue, summarising the findings gained, will place these in a broader context and, as such, identify characteristic phenomena and trends in the development of Florentine painting.
