Next to the Old Master drawings, the German drawings of the period 1800 to 1850 constitute the most important collection in the Kupferstichkabinett at the Hamburger Kunsthalle. The extraordinary oeuvres of the Romantic artists Philipp Otto Runge and Caspar David Friedrich are of paramount international importance, but among the over 2000 drawings there are also examples of draughtsmanship from the Nazarenes and Deutsch Römer that are remarkable for art history. They have never before been exhibited in their entirety or contextualized within the complete collection of the Kupferstichkabinett. Because a systematic editing and documentation of the total collection had not hitherto taken place, it was on a completely inadequate level that did not meet scientific standards. The schorlarly work on the collection not only will yield new insights concerning single drawings and artists, but also is an important contribution to the history of drawing collections. Since October 1, 2009, the project has aimed to make for the first time the entire significant collection of German drawings from the first half of the 19th century in the Kupferstichkabinett at the Hamburger Kunsthalle accessible to the public as well as to scholars. On the basis of data compiled using the Museumsmanagementsystem MuseumPlus, a scholarly catalogue of the collection has been developed that contains the complete photographic and technical registration of the drawings, technique, measurements, dating, inscriptions, inventory number, watermark, connecting it with a bibliography referring to the object as well as substantial provenance documentation and their art historical criteria. The insights earned from this project will be published in an online-database with open access. The webclient eMuseumPlus, based upon the backend database MuseumPlus, permits the presentation of the results on individually designed websites as well as research for art historical criteria. It also has applications in multimedia and virtual tour arenas. Moreover eMuseumPlus guarantees the assignment of data in terms of long term data backup.
