Sencun ZhuPennsylvania State University0643906CAREER: Combating Worm Propagation in Emergent NetworksPanel ID: 070111AbstractWorms have emerged as one of the leading threats to ourinformation systems and critical infrastructures. Despite thetremendous research effort in combating worms, new computer andsystem vulnerabilities are continuously reported and new wormattacks keep succeeding. Another significant trend in worm attacksis that the number of worm attacks against emergent networks, suchas P2P networks, cellphone networks, and sensor networks, israpidly growing. Because of the unique communication models and/orresource constraints of the emergent networks, most of theexisting solutions for Internet worm defenses are not directlyapplicable. The objective of this project is to combat worm propagation inthese emergent networks. Specifically, various approaches aredesigned for rapidly distributing security patches to P2P nodesinfected by worms propagating via file sharing applications andtopological scanning. Also, both device and network sides defensesare used to contain cellphone worms that propagate through eithermultimedia messaging services or Bluetooth interfaces. Finally, itincludes mechanisms to confine worms that propagate by exploitingthe monoculture of sensor programs in sensor networks. Theproposed research will provide fundamental services and tools tocombat worms in emergent networks. It draws upon a variety oftopics including cryptography, graph theory (graph coloring, percolation theory, partition, dominating set), system (mobilesystems), networking (P2P, cellular network, sensor network) andstatistics. The results of the project will be disseminated widelythrough publications and talks, and the proposed research willalso be integrated with the education curricula.
