The problem is a significant one, and the PIs are well positioned to conduct useful research to address it. The proposed experiments address the key issues that need to be considered. Although molecular modeling will be useful for exploring certain trends relationship between system performance and polymer structure and density, some evaluators are quite skeptical that the modeling can be applied directly to identify the system properties that are optimal for the practical application of the technology. The PIs have a credible plan to recruit and train underrepresented minority students to work on the project. Also, the development of the modified membranes is likely to provide useful information that could be valuable for other potential applications of technology.
