ShahDMS-0803059 The investigator and his colleagues at the Department ofMathematics of the University of Central Florida introduce ayear-long computational mathematics research and trainingprogram. Using exciting applications of mathematics in imagesand videos as motivating examples, this CSUMS program providesparticipants with a solid background in both mathematical theoryand problem-solving techniques to pursue careers and graduatestudy in fields that require integrated strengths in computationand the mathematical sciences. The program starts in the springsemester with classes that prepare students in numerical methods, mathematical modeling, and computer vision and imaging science. Then, in an intensive summer component, the students immersethemselves in a research project. In the fall semester theycontinue to conduct research and take additional classes inadvanced computer vision and imaging science, and advancedmathematical modeling. In the follow-up spring semester, thestudents submit their research for publication, finish anundergraduate honors thesis, and get training in graduate careeradvancement issues. In addition, participants attendprofessional conferences, which give them a chance to presenttheir research and to meet known researchers in the field, whomay serve as their role models. To broaden the students'perspective, there are field trips to technology companies incentral Florida area such as Lockheed-Martin, Harris, and Boeing. Finally in order to promote interaction amongst the students, aseminar course is installed throughout the program and severalsocial events are included such as dinners with distinguishedspeakers visiting the campus. A cohort of 10 participants is selected each year among mathmajors and minors at UCF. The key elements of the programinclude: to have a full year training in carefully designedcourse work so that the participants can master the mathematicaland computational fundamentals, to engage each participant in ameaningful research project integrated into the year-longprogram, and to develop the participants' skills in communicatingscientific ideas in writing and oral presentations throughwriting journal papers for publication, giving routine seminarpresentations, and presenting at the professional meetings. Theprogram represents a team effort of faculty members frommathematics, computer science, education and industry. It leadsto the development of a year-long research-oriented curriculumfor computational mathematics. In particular, the participantsare trained in and exposed to the latest techniques and criticalissues in computational mathematics through both upgraded andnewly designed courses and real-life research projects incomputer vision and imaging science, which involve videocompression, image denoising, object detection, tracking, activity and event recognition. This project contributes topreparing a work force of diverse scientists in order to maintainAmerica's strategic position of command in science andengineering. Participants are trained in computationalmathematics with an emphasis on computer vision and imagingscience, in particular they learn fundamentals of computationwith applications of consequence in areas such as nationaldefense and intelligence, homeland security, and biomedical andlife sciences. The outcome of this CSUMS model, its evaluation, related research, articles, and curriculum materials, isdisseminated to other colleges and universities via a dedicatedweb site.
