Undergraduate Research: Cross-Lingual Approaches to Morphosyntactic Tagging

The main goal of this project is to build a team ofundergraduate students in Linguistics and Computer Science towork on the research project collaboratively. Through thisexperience, the students will be able to learn about eachother's disciplines, linguistic properties of many interestinglanguages, tagset design, various supervised/unsupervisedapproaches to morphosyntactic tagging as well as acquiremathematical modeling and algorithmic skills -- all whileworking as part of the research team.In this research, the PI together with her students willexplore how cross-lingual correspondences can be used forscientific and technological benefit, and provide a betterunderstanding of what linguistic properties are crucial formorphosyntactic transfer.This award will play a central role in expanding inquiry-basedlearning, fostering student collaborations, and providingvaluable hands-on experience of highly practical work ondifficult, morphologically rich under-represented languages.The impact of this project is expected to translate intosignificant gains in recruitment of minority students throughresearch training in Computer Science and Linguistics. Theundergraduates who work on this project will collaborate on thewriting of research publications and present at nationalmeetings so that they can contribute to the research culturewhile enhancing their research awareness.
