The low-metallicity ISM: From high redshift to the local Universe

The project proposed here is a continuation of the project "The low-metallicity ISM: Metal enrichment, chemistry, feedback and magnetic fields". In the previous project, we have investigated the interplay of supernova explosions with magnetic field structures in the ISM, developed the KROME package for the modelling of chemistry in numerical simulations and pursued some first applications in the low-metallicity ISM. In the second funding period, we plan to investigate the implications of chemistry and turbulent magnetic field amplification in the context of nearby dwarf galaxies, as new data from Herschel and advanced radio facilities like LOFAR provide new insights into the structure of their ISM. Specifically, we aim for a detailed modelling of the ISM phases at low metallicity (sub-project ISMPHASES), and we will explore the result of turbulent magnetic field amplification in the presence of supernova feedback (sub-project EXPLOSION). These projects allow us, for instance, to probe whether the far-infrared - radio correlation should hold even in dwarf galaxies, and help with the interpretation of Herschel line data.
