Based on results from functional and structural imaging we were able to successfully apply non-invasive brain stimulation to primary and secondary motor areas to enhance impaired motor functions in stroke patients and old healthy subjects. Besides primary and secondary motor areas, the cerebellum is densely interconnected with the motor network. Pilot data suggest that stimulation of the cerebellum may lead to improved motor learning. Thus, in the following funding period we will evaluate the effects of bifocal stimulation (e.g., of primary motor cortex and cerebellum) on motor behavior, learning and interareal connectivity in stroke patients and old healthy subjects.
