A large proportion of Medieval German Lyric has been passed down several times. An intense theoretical discussion about medieval textuality and mediality in recent years has shown that the textual transmission in its variability should be taken very seriously. The aim of the project is to transfer this level of knowledge consequently into editorial practice. The means to achieve this is to replace the print version of a book with the electronic edition. Only the electronic edition allows for the processing of texts in their different ways of transmission in such a way that every user can be provided with exactly the synopsis that is currently needed. In addition, the text cannot only be presented in an editorially modified way but also in manifestations which lead - just as digital reproduction and transcription - straight to the manuscripts themselves. Finally, it allows selecting electronic media to make texts freely accessible (Open Access). The project is therefore considered a pioneer project which is designed to test both the editorial standards for a lyric edition with close reference to textual transmission as well as their technical specifications. The corpora are selected in such a way as to cover the whole diversity of genres of high-medieval lyric with Leich, Minnesang, and Sangspruch and to represent different types of authors. Moreover, the focus is on authors whose texts have been passed down several times and hence in various forms and that have hitherto been inadequately edited.
