About one million people die from Sudden Cardiac Arrest in the western world anually. While more and more patients can be resuscitated on scene, many patients suffer from severe neurocognitive deficits due to the profound cerebral hypoxemia during cardiac arrest. Every other patient requires permanent medical care after hospital discharge. Therapeutic hypothermia (MTH) is the only clinically proven treatment to reduce neurologic sequelae in survivors of cardiac arrest. MTH intends to minimize the secondary reperfusion-inury, but does not target the primary cause of cerebral hypoperfusion - poor circulation during resuscitation efforts. Therefore we propose to evaluate the efficacy of a Left Ventricular Assist Device in a porcine model of cardiac arrest and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation in in terms of the rate of return of spontaneous circulation, as well as clinical neurocognitive performance following CPR in comparison to conventional chest compressions.
