The project is part of a package proposal aiming at new Fe-Pd based ferromagnetic shape memory alloys for sensor applications. The aim of this project is to identify new FSMA with improved intrinsic properties, i.e. both martensitic and ferromagnetic transition temperatures well above room temperature as well as a high magnetic anisotropy and saturation magnetization. The search will be based on the Fe-Pd system with additions of further elements. The strategy to find new alloys in the Fe-Pd-X(-Y) system will be based on the combinatorial materials science approach, i.e. deposition of thin film materials libraries and high-throughput characterization of these by automated screening technologies. An automated measurement of temperature-dependent magneto-electronic properties for the identification of phase transitions and micro-machined cantilever arrays for the parallel optical detection of the shapememory effect and magnetostrictive effects will be used. The compositional dependencies of martensitic and ferromagnetic phase transformation temperatures, as well as magnetoresistive effects in the Fe-Pd-X(-Y) thin films will be studied in detail in order to optimize film properties. Finally, it will be investigated if field-induced strain can be detected in the newly developed films by using microsystem technology.
