本研究では、アッシリア帝国の使者と書簡通信システムの解明を目的とし、まず使者として使われるアッカド語の用語とその類語を整理した。とりわけアッシリア王が派遣した使者の場合、「王の護衛」と一般的に訳される職名を持つ者が担う事例があると指摘されていたが、近年出版された史料集を検討したところ、より多くの事例数を確認できた。使役動物に関しては、速達サービス利用下ではラバ2頭を1ペアで使用し1頭を予備としたことが先行研究から知られていた。しかし通常時は馬、ロバも利用され、基本的に一人一頭の使用であったと分かった。またこれらの動物の使用スタイルは、速達サービスの際には騎乗だけでなく、チャリオットが用いられた可能性も判明した。「王の道」と呼ばれた幹線道路については該当する用語が四つあり、宿駅の用語は二つ確認することができた。宿駅は、それが置かれた地名から郊外では地方都市や集落に設置され、集落の場合は宿駅を維持するための世帯数に言及する文書も確認できた。大都市や州都では宿駅という用語が用いられないことから、何らかの建物が宿駅の代わりを果たしたと想定している。宿駅の維持・管理・運営は、それが位置する州の総督、もしくはアッシリアから任命された高官が担ったと先行研究は指摘したが、宿駅や速達サービスのための人員や動物などの装備の設置は現地役人の判断ではなく、アッシリア王の命令により行われたことが分かった。またこれまで知られていなかったが、速達サービスのため宿駅で人員や動物が利用された場合、これらを元々あった宿駅に返却する必要があったと明らかにした。
