项目摘要

本研究は「人新世」と呼ばれる時代認識の思想的起源を、およそ19世紀の産業革命期から両大戦間期のイギリスにおいて展開されたエコノミーとエコロジーをめぐる思想史を軸に解明することを目的としている。人新世の端緒とされる化石燃料の大量燃焼に依存する「化石経済」の出現を、同時代の人文知や社会科学的な知がどのように批判的分析の対象としてきたのか、という歴史の解明が中心的な課題となる。初年度は、いちはやく石炭枯渇の問題を論じたW.S.ジェヴォンズ、および大規模な石炭燃焼に伴う環境と社会の劣化について考察したJ.ラスキンの経済思想を中心に分析したが、22年度はこれを踏まえ、両者の問題意識がその後イギリスの社会・経済思想においてどのような形で引き継がれ展開されていったかを明らかにすべく、生物学や物理学の諸原理から経済原理の刷新を試みた生物学者パトリック・ゲデスと物理化学者フレデリック・ソディを中心に検討を行った。ゲデスについては初年度より着手していたが、今年度はラスキンからの思想的受容とその知的・社会的背景、およびゲデスの生物学研究とその経済学的意味を軸に検討を進め、ゲデスの生物経済学の企図の全体像を明らかにした。ソディについては、放射性研究から経済学研究への転向の背景（帝国主義的戦争と科学動員体制）を明らかにしたうえで、彼の経済学の主著である『富、虚構の富、負債』（1926年）を戦間期のギルド社会主義や貨幣改革論の文脈に位置づけて、その環境・経済思想上の意義について検討した。以上の検討により、とりわけ「富と生命」を軸とするラスキンのポリティカル・エコノミーのヴィジョンが、19世紀末から戦間期にかけて、協同組合運動を含む広義の社会主義的な動向において、エコロジーとエコノミーを架橋する思想的・実践的な試みの一つの重要な参照点となっていたことを浮き彫りにすることができたと考えている。

This study focuses on the origin and purpose of the "human revolution" and the 19th century industrial revolution. The advent of fossil fuels at the end of the new century is dependent on the massive combustion of fossil fuels, and contemporary knowledge of humanities and social sciences is a central subject of critical analysis. In the first year of 2011, W.S. discussed the issue of coal depletion, and examined the environmental and social degradation associated with large-scale coal burning. We focused on the analysis of J. Ruskin's economic thoughts. In 2012, we embarked on this, and our awareness of problems has been reflected in the future development of social and economic thoughts. The principles of biology and physics are updated, and biologists are engaged in research and development. In the beginning of this year, we began to discuss the social background, biological research and the implications of biological science, and the overall image of biological science. However, the background of the direction of radioactivity research and economic research (the imperialist struggle and the scientific mobilization system) has become clear, and the main book of his economics,"Wealth, Fictional Wealth, Debt"(1926), has been discussed in the context of the theory of inter-period socialism and monetary reform, and in the ideological meaning of the environment and economics.
