项目摘要

昨年度に引き続き、15世紀イングランドの神学者レジナルド・ピーコックの思想について研究を進めている。2022年度は、研究の途中経過を日本中世英語英文学会の全国大会で発表することができた。この発表においては、目下とくに注目している問題、つまりピーコックが著作で展開している論理上・議論上の戦略について検討した。取り上げた作品は『キリスト教の原理』と『聖職者を過剰に批判することに反して』である。ピーコックにとって、神学議論において最も効果的な道具は三段論法 (syllogism) であることは古くから研究者たちによって指摘されてきた。しかしピーコック自身は、神の存在証明や、他の重要な神学問題が、スコラ神学において規範であったこの論理手法によって証明されるべきだとは必ずしも考えていないように思われる。実際、ピーコックは神の存在については、「ありそうである」(‘probable’, ‘likely’) であることが証明できれば十分だと考えていたことが、上述の2作品の分析から明らかになる。このように考えると、重要な帰結が導かれるであろう。ピーコックは私たち人間が神によって与えられた「自然の力」(‘natural powers’) を行使することによって神の理解に到達できると考えていたのではないだろうか。つまり、私たち人間は、神に関する様々な問題について考え議論する際に、「神の証明」(divine illumination) に頼る必要はないとピーコックは言っているのではないだろうか。このように、2022年度においては、ピーコックの神学体系は三段論法を重視しているように見えて、実はこの三段論法からこぼれ落ちてしまうような問題に気づいており、そのような問題をピーコックは拾い上げようとしていたのではないかという可能性について考察した。
