本研究は、A：明治期において日本からアメリカロースクールに留学した人物を網羅的に検出し、彼らの基礎データ（留学時の年齢、出身の地域や学校、それまでのキャリア等）を収集・整理すること、B：彼らが留学先においてどのような講義を受けたか、どのような入学試験を受けたかなどの具体的な内容を調査・分析すること、C：彼らが帰国後にどのようなキャリアを形成し、留学からどのよう思想的影響を受けたかを調査・分析すること、の大きく3つを柱とするものである。2022年度は、（新型コロナ感染症の問題と旅費高騰の問題で複数回の海外出張は難しかったことから）ウェブ上でデジタル化されていて閲覧が可能なアメリカの各大学が所蔵する史料（Catalogue and Announcementsなどの要覧など）を用いて、留学者の検出作業を継続し（A）、彼らが学んだそれぞれの時代に開講されていた科目・内容・担当者などを、やはりウェブ上で閲覧可能なアメリカ各大学所蔵の史料（各大学のAnnual Reportなど）から把握した（B）。A・Bともに、関連する先行研究を網羅的に集めることも並行して進めた。また、上記A・Bの調査を研究代表者・分担者三人で分担して進めるのとは別に、三人の共通する研究対象として、特に金子堅太郎のBとCとの結びつきを検討することにした（金子堅太郎はハーバード大学ロースクールで学び、帰国後は官僚・政治家として活躍したことが知られているが、残した文章や講演から、留学の影響を色濃く感じ取ることができる人物の一人である）。各自の調査について進捗報告をする機会として、およそ2ヶ月に1度の頻度で、対面・オンラインでの研究会を開催した。この研究会は、22年度の後半は金子堅太郎についての研究発表をその内容の中心とした。金子堅太郎研究の成果については、2023年度中に発表の予定である。
