本研究は、仮想現実 <VR> が、発達障がい者の歯科治療時の不安軽減に有効かどうかを明らかにすることを目的とする。発達障がい者は、その発達特性により歯科治療時に極度の不安を感じる場合があるため、何らかの不安軽減が必要となる。近年、抜歯などの口腔外科処置中のストレス軽減にVRによる「没入感」が有効であることが注目されている。申請者らは、この「没入感」は発達障がい者の不安軽減にも有効だと期待している。研究対象者には、４回以上の歯科治療を要する本学附属病院障がい者歯科の初診患者のうち、発達障害の診断を受けている満16歳以上の患者20名を対象とした。４回以上の歯科治療に対して、VRによる没入感あり条件と無し条件とを交互に設定する。研究対象者はあらかじめ、①VRあり条件 → 無し条件 → あり条件 → 無し条件の順とする群と、②VR無し条件 → あり条件 → 無し条件 → あり条件の順とする群とに、ランダムに2群に分ける。VRはその没入感を誘発する機能から医療分野で不安軽減に用いられているヘッドセット型の音声付きディスプレイである。本研究では、VRを用い、大地や海洋、森林などを飛行するアニメーション動画を研究対象者に視聴させることで没入感の誘発を図った。歯科治療中のストレスを評価するためにVisual Analog Scale（VAS）を用いた評価に加え、心拍数、自律神経活動（交感神経（LF）・副交感神経（HF）・バランス（LF/HF））を測定した。
