特別支援学校に通う知的障がいの子どもは心身の発達や障がいの程度の個人差が大きく思春期の性の目覚めの際に、自身の身体的発達に心理・社会的発達が追い付かずに自身や保護者が対応しきれずに危機的状況に陥りやすい。近年、「国際セクシュアリティガイダンス」が改変され、性教育支援の重要性が再認識されている。そこで、本研究の目的は、日本の特別支援学校における性教育支援ならびに包括的性教育の実践度などの現状を調査して、性教育支援に対する課題と支援の方向性を検討することである。現在、全国にある知的障がいのある小学部、中学部をもつ特別支援学校を対象に性教育支援の実態、包括的性教育の重要度の認識ならびに実践度、実践者、性に関する対応の頻度やニーズなどの質問紙調査を行っている。現時点で、35校から回答があった。性教育支援の実施率は、小学校低学年では半数が年間1～10時間、3割が実施していないと回答した。小学校高学年では9割が、中学生では95%が実施していると回答していた。性教育の内容は約半数の学校が十分、やや十分と回答し、性教育の時間も約半数が十分、やや十分と回答していた。包括的性教育の重要度を「１：重要でない～5：重要である」の5段階で尋ねたところ、平均4.4±0.6であった。同様に包括的性教育の実践度を「１：実践していない～5：実践している」の5段階で尋ねたところ平均3.0±1.0であった。学校生活の中で性に関連する内容での対応する時間を尋ねたところ4割の学校が「ほぼ毎日」と回答しており、学校生活の中で性に関する対応が日常的に行われていることが明らかになった。また、自由記述では、子どもの個人差が大きく、子どもの状況に応じて日常的に対応を余儀なくされている現状が書かれていた。しかしながら、回収率が１割程度と少ないため、未回答の特別支援学校を対象に再度調査依頼を行う予定である。
