終末期にある非がん（例えば、心不全や呼吸器疾患など）の高齢患者の家族は、患者とともに療養生活を送る中で、身体的・精神的疲労、介護負担の増大、自身の健康問題への不安、患者の意思決定に関わることの負担感など、様々なストレスを体験している。非がん患者の場合、長期的な経過をたどることが多いため、家族にとってこれらのストレスはより深刻な問題となる。しかし、家族に対するケアについては確立されていない。終末期にある非がんの高齢患者の家族が、患者とともにエンドオブライフを過ごすなかで生じるストレスに対処し、よりよく生きることができるよう支援することは喫緊の課題である。そこで本研究は、第1段階；一般病棟に入院している終末期にある非がんの高齢患者の家族のストレス・コーピングの特徴を明らかにし、第2段階；専門看護師やベテラン看護師による終末期にある非がんの高齢患者の家族のストレス・コーピングを促すケアの実際について明らかにする。第3段階；第1、2段階の研究結果をもとに、終末期にある非がん高齢患者の家族のストレス・コーピングを促すケアプログラムを開発し有効性を検証する。2022年度は、第1段階の研究を実施する予定であったが、新型コロナウイルス感染症の影響により、対象者の確保がかなり難しい状況が続いており、計画通りに進んでいない。対象者の確保の方法を情報収集をしながら検討していく。
