最終年度では、ネガティブな完全主義を持つアスリートが、ミスや失敗を頭のなかで何度も振り返るのか、その「反すう」によってメンタルヘルスが悪化するかを調査した。大学生アスリート82名(男性69名、女性13名: 平均年齢20.88歳，SD=0.92) がインターネット調査に参加した。質問紙には、競技歴のほか、ネガティブな完全主義、反すう、バーンアウトを測定する尺度を用いた。相関分析の結果、ネガティブな完全主義は反すうと低い正の相関を持ったが、バーンアウトとは無相関であった。一方で、反すうはバーンアウトと中程度の正の相関を持った。重回帰分析においてもこれらの傾向は確認され、ネガティブな完全主義はバーンアウトを予測せず、反すうがバーンアウトを有意に予測していた。これらの結果は、ネガティブな完全主義的なアスリートは反すうをするものの、アスリートのバーンアウトに直接的に影響するのは反すうであることを示唆している。研究期間全体を通じて、アスリートに特有のストレス状況で、完全主義がどのような影響を及ぼすか検証した。特にネガティブな完全主義が高いアスリートほど、ケガをしたときに、自らのネガティブな感情に注意を向けてしまうが、ポジティブな完全主義が高いアスリートは、積極的にケガに対処していること、そして、ネガティブな完全主義が高いアスリートほど、ミスや失敗をした場面を頭のなかで何度も振り返ってしまい、この反すうがアスリートのバーンアウトに影響を与えることが明らかになった。これらを総合すると、ネガティブな完全主義は直接的にアスリートのケガをメンタルヘルスに影響を与えるというよりも、ケガへの対処の仕方や、反すうなどを媒介して、ネガティブな結果を導いていることが示唆された。
