研究一年目である令和２年度は、かんらん舎の画廊主、大谷芳久氏へのインタビューを通して画廊設立の経緯と画廊活動のオーラルヒストリーを収集。オーラルヒストリーと併せて、１９８０年から１９９３年までの氏と所属作家の文通記録の調査。画廊の史実について図録『KANRANSHA 1980-1992』を参照しながら整理した。かんらん舎の所属作家にもインタビューを実施し、大谷氏から受けた支援やかんらん舎との関わりについての聞き取り調査を行った。また、大谷氏の画廊運営の根底にある批評精神についての理解を深めるため、氏の著作物『藤牧義夫真僞』や同人誌『一寸』に連載された「時に抗いし者たちー私の小菩薩峠」を調査。これらの著作物に共通する、作品をことの表われとして捉える氏の芸術観や、個々の作家や大谷氏自身の「表現の内的必然性」への関心を言語化するために、レイモンド・ウィリアムズの文化研究を参照した。ウィリアムズの文化の定義や「個人と社会」の関係性についての考察を引き合いに、かんらん舎の所属作家が、ぞれぞれに自らを取り囲む社会環境やコミュニティに対して、個人としてどのような態度で向き合い、それらの「こと」が作品として如何にして表われたかについてを追求した。作家がそれぞれの批評的視座から個として実践した社会への問いかけについての考察である。これらの研究から、かんらん舎が１９８０年代にヨーロッパ現代美術を日本に紹介した意義や、４３年間の画廊活動に通底するかんらん舎の哲学についてをまとめ、所属研究機関である東京藝術大学美術学部の紀要論文に投稿した。研究機関の退職に伴い科研費の助成は令和２年度をもって終了となるが、今後も本研究を継続するための資料整理と基礎研究を実施することができた。
